I’m posting this interview with Mutha Magazine about my novel, Mother Mother, in which I talk about getting my arms around the thousands of details and emotions surrounding the story. Cheryl Klein’s introduction sets up the interview so well–first, because Klein is such a talented writer and her words are a joy to read; second, because Klein’s understanding of adoption is deep and layered; and third, because she asks such excellent, probing, revelatory questions. The photos Klein chose from Guatemala to contextualize the piece are perfect.
All of Klein’s editorial observations are spot-on and brilliant, and these lines particularly resonate: “Adoption exists at the intersections of privilege and oppression, destiny and happenstance….To truly understand adoption, the novel suggests, one can’t ignore the zygote-small details or the great cruel tides that pull us all.”
It was an honor to participate in this interview. Read it here.
