Adoption is not a simple solution

There’s a lot of wisdom earned by experience in this essay by Kristin Fasy on NBC News Now, “As an adoptive mother, I know adoption doesn’t fix a lack of abortion access.” One line especially resonates for me: “We chose to adopt and therefore accept the humbling, messy, demanding work of navigating the road toward healing and connection.”

Our kids were separated from their natural mothers. How can that separation not have ramifications–for them, for us, for everyone who is involved?

    Tim

An unexpected surprise: Newsweek posted a list of the “top 50 medical dermatologists in the US” and Tim is number 20. A medical dermotologist is someone who treats patients with complicated skin disease; I often call Tim “Sherlock Holmes” for his ability to solve medical mysteries.

Over the years, many patients have sent Tim handwritten notes after he’s treated them. One of my favorites read “You gave me my life back. Thank you for listening.”

If you know Tim, you know he’s compassionate and kind, not to mention a great cook, outstanding gardener and award-winning teacher. Please indulge me as a proud wife thrilled to see her husband recognized.

    At the library

A friend just sent me this pic from a display at the San Anselmo Public Library in Marin County, California.

    I love our libraries!

So grateful to see my novel highlighted. (Mother Mother, top shelf.)

    Our party redux

Some snaps from our Memorial Day party 2022. Old friends and new, which was lovely to see, our children now teens and young adults. One friend described her conversations as “real and heartfelt,” which is how a conversation with anyone in this group always feels to me. I call our Guatadopt community my lifeline.

For the party, everyone pitches in with food and help, and this year we had the added bonus of my sister Deanna and her three daughters. My husband and I are grateful to everyone who brought food and carried trays, who bussed tables and cleaned up, who chatted and laughed and ate and participated. Who shared their photos because I never remember to take any. Who allowed their photo to be taken.

Same time next year, if the universe is willing. 🇬🇹

    Annual Guatadopt gathering

After a two-year hiatus, my husband Tim and I are thrilled to host our annual gathering of San Francisco Bay Area Guatadopt families tomorrow, Sunday May 29. The party will be completely outdoors and the forecast is for clear skies. My sister Deanna and her family, visiting from Boston, will co-host. Today De helped with the Costco run–always more fun with my little sister. Can’t wait to see friends after too, too long!
