Graduation Day

Olivia graduated from high school on Friday. A gorgeous ceremony outdoors, with 600 seniors receiving diplomas. Olivia brought a flag from Guatemala which she unfurled afterward. The entire day made me more optimistic about the future than I’ve been in a long while. So much energy, talent, smarts and heart. Proud of our graduates!

Mateo running

The team entering the track, with Mt. Tamalpais in the background

Mateo joined the high school track last year and, a week before Covid hit, ran his first track meet. Which turned out to be last his track meet. He rejoined this Spring, competing in the 4×100, the 100 and 200. While he didn’t break any records, the kid never missed a practice and pushed himself hard. He made me promise not to cheer during his events. “Oh sure,” I said. Wink wink. As if!

“MA-TEEEEEEEEEEEE-OOOOOO!!!!!”

Mateo running is what pure joy looks like. My husband and I could not be more proud.

National Indie Excellence Award finalist

Wonderful (and unexpected) news for MOTHER MOTHER: The novel is a Finalist in the 2021 National Indie Excellence Award for General Fiction. I grappled with this story for years, finally finishing during my 2-year MFA program. I’m eternally grateful to my MFA mentors, Steve Heller, Sarah Van Arsdale and Victoria Patterson, whose observations, suggestions and criticism made the book better.

Thank you, too, to everyone who has read MOTHER MOTHER or plans to read it. To know the story has found an audience means the world to me.
