Sisters

As we know, DNA testing has revolutionized searches for birth relatives, often in ways unexpected. In this case, then-22-year-old mechancial engineer Jenna Barnes, born Maria Mashinka in the Russian industrial city of Nizhniy Novgorod and placed for adoption as an infant, discovered her half-sister is Russian supermodel Natalia Vodianova. The article is fascinating because… Natalia Vodianova!–but also because of its specific details: the story of the girls’ mother’s life, the lives of the girls themselves, and the emotions around everyone’s reunion. (I’m personally happy to read that Jenna’s adoptive parents were “wholly supportive.”)

Says Natalia Vodianova about her long-lost sister Jenna: “I felt she has always been part of my life, even if I didn’t know her. But it was in a quite painful way, always wondering if she was okay. I just feel that we are catching up very quickly. Feels like family. There’s something beautiful about genetics and our genes. Love comes very naturally.”

Our front door

If you’ve been here for a while you know that every year for the past many years I post a photo of Olivia and me in front of the wooden door of the small house where we lived together in Antigua in 2002. Well, Olivia is now 20 and with her own agenda, which this summer did not include a pilgrimage to the other side of town for the annual staged pic. Which means you’re stuck with only me in front of the door of the place that still captures my heart. The casita where we became a family.

I did manage to snap a shot with Olivia and Mateo, sipping smoothies in Antigua during our visit this summer 2022. Close enough. ❤️❤️❤️

Santa Catarina Palopo

IMAGE from SMITHSONIAN MAGAZINE

If you’ve visited Santa Catarina Palopo on the shores of Lake Atitlan Guatemala lately, you’ve seen the town’s transformation into a wonderland of color–shops and homes painted radiant shades of blue and green, inspired by Santa Catarina’s distinctive huipil. Terrific to see the results highlighted in Smithsonian Magazine.

Music Man

Music Man was a huge Hugh (and Sutton) love fest. Can’t remember the last time I was in a room or space so loaded with positive energy and aliveness. The choreography, the dancing, the singing. Exhilarating!

Afterward, De and I joined the throngs at the stage door for a glimpse of the star performer, Hugh Jackman himself, who graciously greeted his adoring fans. Worth every effort.

Boston

I’m at the point in life where I only regret the things I don’t do. Which is why Saturday morning I boarded a 6:35 a.m. train with my sister from Boston to NYC, en route to a Broadway matinee. Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster in Music Man.

As Pater Roonius said in Latin class, “Carpe diem!”
